Prostate Biopsy

Convenient in-office procedure, with optional nitrous oxide sedation.

A prostate biopsy begins by numbing the prostate using lidocaine, then collecting small tissue samples from the prostate gland.

A prostate biopsy in Denver, CO should NEVER cause pain. Dr. Fronczak uses an advanced nerve block technique with lidocaine to fully numb the prostate, ensuring a comfortable experience. Additionally, nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is available for relaxation.

The prostate is imaged by gently inserting an ultrasound probe into the rectum, allowing clear visualization of the gland.

Prophylactic antibiotics are required prior to your biopsy procedure.

Blood thinners and antiplatelet medications must be discontinued for the appropriate duration before your prostate biopsy. Dr. Fronczak will provide detailed pre-procedure instructions. Consult your cardiologist or hematologist if you have concerns about temporarily stopping blood thinners or antiplatelet therapy before your biopsy.

Dr. Fronczak frequently recommends a multiparametric prostate MRI as part of the diagnostic workup for elevated PSA, abnormal digital rectal exam, or active surveillance of known low-grade prostate cancer.

When the MRI identifies a suspicious lesion within the prostate, a targeted fusion biopsy can be performed.

A fusion biopsy works by overlaying real-time transrectal ultrasound imaging of the prostate onto the previously obtained MRI images. This advanced technology enables precise, targeted sampling of the suspicious area.

For cases without a specific MRI-identified lesion, a standard systematic biopsy includes 12 tissue cores from the prostate—6 from the left lobe and 6 from the right lobe. The 12-core systematic biopsy remains the evidence-based gold standard for detecting prostate cancer, validated by numerous clinical studies.

Fusion biopsies are NOT covered by commercial insurance or Medicare and require an out-of-pocket expense to rent the UroNav fusion equipment along with a trained technician to operate the system.

Dr. Fronczak is committed to utilizing evidence-based technology to determine when and how to treat prostate cancer.

Prostate cancer risk stratification ranges from low risk to intermediate risk to high and very high risk.

Patients diagnosed with intermediate, high, or very high-risk prostate cancer may qualify for insurance coverage of a specialized scan called a PSMA PET scan—the most advanced imaging available for detecting metastatic disease.

Treatment options for localized prostate cancer include robotic-assisted prostatectomy (robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy) or radiation therapy. While alternative treatments exist, Dr. Fronczak currently recommends evidence-based, gold standard approaches. She can also refer patients to academic medical centers where additional treatment options may be accessible through clinical trials.
