Sacral Neuromodulation is an implant that includes a small battery computer placed in the upper right or left buttock below the belt line and an electrical lead that stimulates a nerve in the sacrum that controls bladder activity.
The battery sends gentle electrical stimulation to the sacral nerve that calms the bladder down. The exact “why” the stimulator works is still not known by science.
Sacral nerve stimulation has been used for nearly 25 years and just keeps getting better and better with new technology.
I use the Medtronic Sacral Nerve Stimulator because Medtronic started sacral nerve stimulation and their technology keeps getting bettert, plus their entire implant is MRI compatible.
A basic test (peripheral nerve evaluation) is done in my office to see if the stimulator works to reduce the bladder symptoms and stays in for 1 week and is removed in my office as easy as removing a bandaid.
If the basic test works, then the full implant is done in the operating room in less than an hour.
